Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure straight passage to the last 16, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
