The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
