Much like bad weather swept through the northern region the prior day, Manchester City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Losses for United

This outcome signalled back-to-back WSL setbacks for the United manager's side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s ability to manage league and continental soccer with a thin team has been a hotly discussed topic since they secured entry to the UCL. Reviewing the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed fatigued all game, the memorable win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no similar loading concerns. Jeglertz made one change from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The storm clouds started to gather for Skinner and his team from the first whistle. This was a exhibition of the quality from City whose energetic forward line played with and pulled the visitors apart with a superb first half performance that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

This put the hosts firmly in control and saw the visitors all at sea. In advance of this match, United had let in just six in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the presence of City’s creative prowess.

Early Chances

The omens came soon when Miedema used her strength to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. Triple Strike

Second Half

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the visitors were offensively poor and were unable to register a single shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to beat any opponent who placed above them the previous campaign, City's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a strong standing after the opening fixtures.
